Cajon de Maipo, the Valley of Maipo River is the most interesting destination point in the whole Santiago area. Since this area offers huge number of trip options and many species to see, the area is divided into three major sections.
- Cajon de Maipo before San Gabriel.
- Embalse Yeso
- Volcano
The first section covers mid-altitude areas like Alfalfal and is located at a distance of about 40 – 60 km. from Santiago. To reach the two other sections you have to drive to San Gabriel, a village some 70 km. from Santiago. There is a police check-point at that village. Once you have passed it the road continues for about 2 km. and comes to a bifurcation. The road to the left takes you to Embalse Yeso area, with the furtherst point at about 45 km. (Termas del Plomo). The road straight takes you to San Jose Volcano area.
