This is a beautfil large size tree, with many practical uses and extremely beautiful foliage. This species needs a damp, cool, and not too sunny location with somewhat acid soil rich in organic matter. The main use of this plant is ornamental, because of its strange-looking leaves and reddish fruits which remain on the tree for a long time after they are ripe. The bark is used for curing wounds, and the wood itself has a very beautfil structure and is extremely hard, so that it is an excellent material for furniture. The flowers serve for producing honey.
